To a large extent the Mormon decision to not drink coffee or tea is born out of a desire to separate from the common, everyday world . Mormons separate from worldly temptations in order to be closer to God. They also separate from other Christians, Muslims, and Jews in order to bind to one another and establish an identity as a group.
Mormons are not allowed to drink coffee because of the Word of Wisdom , which is a health law found in the unique LDS scripture Doctrine & Covenants 89 whereby God supposedly commanded His people to abstain from hot drinks (interpreted as coffee and tea) as well as tobacco, excessive amounts of meat, and alcoholic beverages.
“The Word of Wisdom” expressly named alcohol, including wine and beer, coffee and tea as things which Mormons should not consume, besides many other food items. Drinking non-alcoholic beer and sparkling cider, rather than champagne, may be acceptable, but they should nonetheless be consumed with caution in order not to cause addiction.
